Uncertainty in a relationship can feel like emotional quicksand. One moment you’re convinced it can be saved, the next you’re planning your exit. If you find yourself stuck in this space it’s important to stop spinning in your head and start gathering grounded information. Here are 10 steps to take when you’re unsure whether to stay:

Remove the urgency to decide immediately
Give yourself permission to pause. Rushing toward a decision often leads to more confusion, not less.
Observe how you feel when you’re around them
Track your emotional state over time. Do you feel safe, respected and understood? Or anxious, dismissed or small? Your nervous system is a reliable compass.
Clarify what you’re actually receiving in the relationship
Not the potential. Not the promise. What are you consistently experiencing? Is the relationship reciprocal, or are you carrying most of the emotional and practical load?
Look for repeated patterns, not isolated events
Everyone makes mistakes. But do the same ruptures keep happening despite conversations and promises to change?
Identify what’s keeping you there
Is it love, guilt, financial dependence, fear of starting over or hope that they’ll change? Each of these has very different implications and emotional weight.
Initiate honest, difficult conversations
How your partner responds to discomfort — whether with defensiveness, avoidance or openness — tells you more than their words. Healthy relationships make space for discomfort and repair.
Visualise your future in the current dynamic
If nothing changes, could you live with this version of the relationship in 12 months? 5 years? Often, we stay because we’re attached to what we wish it could become.
Don’t mistake emotional intensity for compatibility
Feeling devastated, lost or obsessed doesn’t necessarily mean this relationship is meaningful or meant to last. Pain is not proof of depth.
Let discomfort inform you, not control you
It’s okay to be afraid. Choosing to stay or go might bring grief either way. That doesn’t mean you’re making the wrong decision — it just means you’re human.

You don’t need to have all the answers right now. But taking small, intentional steps will move you out of paralysis and into clarity.
