When we think about supporting our nervous system, it’s easy to picture hour-long yoga classes, meditation retreats or elaborate self-care routines. While these practices can be incredibly beneficial, the reality is that most of us are navigating busy schedules, endless to-do lists and competing demands. The good news is that supporting your nervous system doesn’t have to take a lot of time.

Small Moments, Big Impact

Small, intentional moments of regulation sprinkled throughout your day can have a powerful impact on how you feel, think and respond to stress. These “mini regulation moments” help signal safety to your body, allowing you to move through your day with greater calm, resilience and presence.

One of the simplest ways to regulate your nervous system is through your breath. Taking just 30 seconds to slow your breathing can help shift your body out of a stress response.

Try breathing in slowly through your nose for four counts and breathing out for six counts. The longer exhale encourages your body to activate its relaxation response, helping you feel more grounded and settled.

Movement is another effective tool. Our bodies are designed to move and gentle movement can help release built-up tension. Stretch your arms overhead between meetings, roll your shoulders back or take a quick walk around the block.

Even one minute of intentional movement can help reset your nervous system and improve your focus.

Sensory awareness can also be incredibly regulating. Pause for a moment and notice what you can see, hear, feel, smell or taste. This practice brings your attention back to the present moment and can help interrupt cycles of worry or overwhelm. Holding a warm cuppa, feeling the sunshine on your skin, or listening to the sounds around you are all simple ways to reconnect with your surroundings.

Connect for Calm

Connection is another often-overlooked form of regulation. A brief chat with a friend, sharing a smile with a colleague or spending a few moments with a loved one can help your nervous system feel supported and safe.

We are wired for connection, and even small interactions can positively influence how we feel.

You can also create mini moments of pause throughout your day. Before opening your inbox, stepping into a meeting or moving between tasks, take a few seconds to check in with yourself. Notice how you’re feeling without judgement. Ask yourself what you need in that moment. Sometimes the answer is a deep breath, a glass of water, a stretch or simply slowing down for a minute.

The key is consistency rather than perfection. Nervous system regulation isn’t about eliminating stress completely; it’s about giving your body regular opportunities to return to balance. These small practices may seem insignificant on their own, but over time they help build a foundation of resilience and wellbeing.
