Central to forming a habit is a neurological process called the habit loop. The habit loop is formed when the brain links a cue, a stimulus or trigger, to a routine or a behaviour. This loop is reinforced with a reward, a benefit resulting from the behaviour. When the reward is appealing the cue will trigger the behaviour and a habit is created. When we repeatedly act on a behaviour, such as nail biting or affirmations of our self-worth, we are strengthening that neural pathway. Practical tips for changing not so wanted habits include:

Ø  Identify the thoughts and cues driving your current habits.

Ø  Spend time each day examining and challenging unhelpful thought patterns.

Ø  Swap unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with positive, healthy ones.

Ø  Commit to at least two months of focused effort to truly rewire a habit.

Ø  Practices such as journalling, meditative breathing or affirmations can help to anchor new patterns.
