We all have habits that we wish we could change such as mindlessly scrolling through social media, skipping exercise or reaching for junk food when stressed. The good news is that breaking bad habits and replacing them with healthier ones is possible. It just requires the right mindset and approach.
1. Identify the Trigger
Every habit starts with a trigger, a specific situation, emotion or time of day that sets off the behaviour. Start by recognising what triggers your bad habit.
For example, do you snack when you’re bored? Do you procrastinate when you feel overwhelmed? Once you identify the trigger, you can begin to change your response.
2. Replace the Habit
Instead of simply trying to stop the bad habit, replace it with a healthier one.
If stress leads you to grab unhealthy snacks, try swapping that with going for a short walk or drinking a glass of water. Replacing bad habits with positive alternatives makes the change more sustainable.
3. Start Small
Don’t try to overhaul everything at once. Focus on one habit at a time and make small, manageable changes. If you want to exercise more, start with just 10 minutes a day. Over time, these small steps add up to significant progress.
4. Create a Supportive Environment
Your environment has a huge influence on your habits. If you want to eat healthier, keep nutritious snacks easily accessible and avoid buying junk food. If you want to be more productive, minimise distractions in your workspace.
5. Be Patient and Persistent
Breaking bad habits takes time, and it’s normal to experience setbacks. What matters is that you stay consistent and don’t give up after a slip-up. Focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate small wins along the way.
